Room 30 rocks!

Today we are joining with the rest of Team 3 in making some Rocks, similar to the Roto Rocks that you may have seen in places such as the Redwoods.  Weather permitting, we are hiding our rocks either tomorrow or early next term, in the Waitawa Bush for others to find!

Check out this short movie of us today:

Swimming Fun

For the last two weeks we've been participating in swimming in the school pool.  We have been practicing our skills as well as thinking about how to keep ourselves safe in the water.  If we do well during our structured learning time, Mrs Belt gives us some free time at the end of each lesson.  Here are a few photos of us enjoying some of that free time!

Crazy Hair and Dress Up Day

Yesterday Room 30 looked a little bit different!  Room 30 learners joined in with the rest of the school coming to school in some amazing dress up outfits with some very crazy hair.  Mrs Belt took a photo of us all and we sure looked amazing.

Congratulations Bradley

This week Bradley took home the Principals Award for Room 30 for his wonderful work ethic.  Bradley has been trying really hard with his activities in class and striving for a very high standard.  Keep it up Bradley.

Our Trip to the Childrens Art Cottage

Today Room 30 had an amazing trip to the Children's Art Cottage.  We really enjoyed the trip on the bus and there was some great singing of "The Wheels on the Bus".  When we arrived at the Art Cottage, the wonderful educators there shared a local legend with us as well as a piece of art created to represent this legend.  We had to close our eyes and listen to the story so we could visualise what was happening.

Then Room 30 started creating their own art.  We learnt some great times for using pastels and there are some amazing pieces of art underway.  We have taken these back to our classroom to finish over the next week.

A huge thank you to the parents that came with us today, without who the trip would not be possible. This is just a selection of some of the photos that were taken on the trip today.  We look forward to having our artwork up on the wall for viewing soon.

Congratulations to Jonah who today received the Principals Award in Room 30 for his kindness to all his classmates!  He has started Year 3 as a great role model and we love having him in Room 30.  Well done Jonah!

Descriptive writing .... the Rotorua Mud Pools

As one of our writing tasks this week we had to write five sentences to describe mud pools.  Using the iPads we have displayed these creatively using Explain Everything.  This gave us the chance to use the tools within the app.   Mrs Belt gave us a choice of which photo we wanted to use to display our sentences on and we could choose the colours and size of the font.

Here are a few examples.  We used Seesaw to send our work to Mrs Belt and we could read our sentence using this app.

Reading with our Soft Toys

Soft toys have been popping up all week in Room 30, so Mrs Belt said we could bring them along today for a "reading picnic" under the trees.  We only had a little time at the end of our day before Community, but it was just enough to gather under a shady tree and enjoy some more of our class book.  Mrs Belt is currently reading Fantastic Mr Fox (by Roald Dahl) to us!

After a couple of chapters, we met some of the cuddly toys that had been brought along and heard some of their history.  Everyone really enjoyed this session after lunch so we may just do it again!

Lovely cakes and cupcakes

Thanks to all parents and whanau for supporting the cake stall today.  It was very busy and lots of the children in Room 30 enjoyed a cup cake or something delicious.  In many cases it was a very hard choice - there was quite a selection!  Mrs Belt took a few photos of some of us enjoying our cupcakes - unfortunately some of us were way too quick in eating them, maybe because they were super yummy!

Library Time

On Friday Room 30 has our first visit to the library.  Everyone really enjoyed browsing for some books and Mrs Belt borrowed the Roald Dahl classic, Fantastic Mr Fox, to read to the class.

We hope everyone has enjoyed reading their books over the weekend!  Don't forget to bring them back to school on Friday to change them!

Room 30's Self Portraits

Over the last few days we've been working on self portraits to put on our wall.  With these portraits we were looking at proportions and symmetry and using colour to express ourselves.  The portraits are displayed on our classroom wall - check them out if you visit Room 30.

Room 30 gets iPads

Today was our first session with class iPads.  Firstly we watched a video that showed us some important 'kawa of care' instructions for working with our iPad.  These included:

  • always use two hands when carrying our iPad - use the hug hold
  • do not stack the iPads more than 4 high
  • always use the iPad on a safe surface
  • do not leave your iPad anywhere as when you return it might not be there
  • do not touch the 'tip' of our stylus and always store the stylus in an upright position
  • always be in the right place and use the apps directed by our teacher
  • always follow the instructions of our teacher when using the iPad

Some learners used the iPad for Reading Eggs during reading time, while others had an Explain Everything reading activity to complete.

After lunch we had a whole class lesson on how to use the tools of Explain Everything, including the pencil and rubber, imputing text and creating shapes.  We also learnt how to change colours and save our work onto our iPads.  We are definitely looking forward to doing more learning with our iPads over the coming days and weeks.
