Congratulations Jonah

Congratulations to Jonah who today received the Principals Award in Room 30 for his kindness to all his classmates!  He has started Year 3 as a great role model and we love having him in Room 30.  Well done Jonah!

Descriptive writing .... the Rotorua Mud Pools

As one of our writing tasks this week we had to write five sentences to describe mud pools.  Using the iPads we have displayed these creatively using Explain Everything.  This gave us the chance to use the tools within the app.   Mrs Belt gave us a choice of which photo we wanted to use to display our sentences on and we could choose the colours and size of the font.

Here are a few examples.  We used Seesaw to send our work to Mrs Belt and we could read our sentence using this app.

Reading with our Soft Toys

Soft toys have been popping up all week in Room 30, so Mrs Belt said we could bring them along today for a "reading picnic" under the trees.  We only had a little time at the end of our day before Community, but it was just enough to gather under a shady tree and enjoy some more of our class book.  Mrs Belt is currently reading Fantastic Mr Fox (by Roald Dahl) to us!

After a couple of chapters, we met some of the cuddly toys that had been brought along and heard some of their history.  Everyone really enjoyed this session after lunch so we may just do it again!

Lovely cakes and cupcakes

Thanks to all parents and whanau for supporting the cake stall today.  It was very busy and lots of the children in Room 30 enjoyed a cup cake or something delicious.  In many cases it was a very hard choice - there was quite a selection!  Mrs Belt took a few photos of some of us enjoying our cupcakes - unfortunately some of us were way too quick in eating them, maybe because they were super yummy!

Congratulations Amber

This week the Principal's Award for Room 30 went to Amber for her great work ethic and willingness to help around the classroom.  Well done Amber, what a great start to Year 3!

Library Time

On Friday Room 30 has our first visit to the library.  Everyone really enjoyed browsing for some books and Mrs Belt borrowed the Roald Dahl classic, Fantastic Mr Fox, to read to the class.

We hope everyone has enjoyed reading their books over the weekend!  Don't forget to bring them back to school on Friday to change them!

Room 30's Self Portraits

Over the last few days we've been working on self portraits to put on our wall.  With these portraits we were looking at proportions and symmetry and using colour to express ourselves.  The portraits are displayed on our classroom wall - check them out if you visit Room 30.

Room 30 gets iPads

Today was our first session with class iPads.  Firstly we watched a video that showed us some important 'kawa of care' instructions for working with our iPad.  These included:

  • always use two hands when carrying our iPad - use the hug hold
  • do not stack the iPads more than 4 high
  • always use the iPad on a safe surface
  • do not leave your iPad anywhere as when you return it might not be there
  • do not touch the 'tip' of our stylus and always store the stylus in an upright position
  • always be in the right place and use the apps directed by our teacher
  • always follow the instructions of our teacher when using the iPad

Some learners used the iPad for Reading Eggs during reading time, while others had an Explain Everything reading activity to complete.

After lunch we had a whole class lesson on how to use the tools of Explain Everything, including the pencil and rubber, imputing text and creating shapes.  We also learnt how to change colours and save our work onto our iPads.  We are definitely looking forward to doing more learning with our iPads over the coming days and weeks.

Fun with PE

Today was our first session in the Gym for PE.  Everyone was really energetic and keen to participate which was great to see.  We played a great warm up game of traffic light statues.  Everyone really enjoyed the "speed camera", "intersection" and "crash" instructions that Mrs Belt gave us!  We then had some relay races, working in teams.

To finish off, we played a game of Stuck in the Mud - Mrs Belt even played too!  We can't wait for our next session next week!

Congratulations Samiuela

This week the Principal's Award in Room 30 went to Samiuela for his great start to the year and how hard he is trying.  Well done Samiuela.

Rotorua is Amazing :)

As part of our inquiry topic (The Value is Us), Room 30 are exploring our city - Rotorua!  We have been writing about the things we really enjoy doing in Rotorua.  We are also learning how to publish our story on our class blog.  Check out some of the stories from this weeks writing:

Jessica

Rotorua is the best place because it has the sorb and the sorb is fun but freaky. Rotorua is also a great place because we can go on volcano walks! I also love Rotorua because chipmunks is at Motion entertainment and I love it. The second to last reason I like Rotorua is the camping grounds.  I love going camping.

Jonah

Rotorua is the best place to live because of the walk track at Okere Falls. I like walking at Okere Falls because it is very calming. I like going to the hot pools because it is so relaxing and there’s a waterslide. l like going mountain biking in Rotorua because it is really fun and you really need to push your pedals. I hope you agree that Rotorua is the best place to live.

Manawa

My favourite place in Rotorua is the Big Splash because I like the splash at the end. Also there is a flaying fox. My favourite place in Rotorua is the luge and the gondola because I had a race. I like the gondola because at night it is very pretty. My favourite place in Rotorua is the Aquatic Centre because I like sprinklers  outside. I like Motion Entertainment because I like Chipmunks at Motion. I like biking in the Redwoods because you can find tents.

Our Class Treaty

Late last week Room 30 worked together to create our class treaty.  We've all added our handprints to the treaty as a sign that we will try our best to honour all the things we agreed to.  You can see our classy treaty on the classroom wall.  Each week Mrs Belt will award Class Dojo points to those learners who are following the treaty and displaying the characteristics of the treaty in the classroom.

Our first day in Room 30

It was great to meet most of the terrific learners of Room 30 today! We had a really fun day getting to know each other and exploring our classroom.  One of our first activities was creating a class spider web and we learnt some things about others in the classroom.  We followed this with a Scavenger Hunt which we need to finish tomorrow!

Later in the day we created leaves for our class tree - check it out on the wall in our classroom!  Mrs Belt thinks our learners REALLY enjoyed using the dye to make our leaves colourful.

Here are a few photos from our first day.  I wonder what we will get up to on day 2?

Welcome to Room 30

Welcome to the Class Blog for Room 30.  Throughout the year we'll be sharing a selection of our wonderful learning with you.  We'd love you to leave us a comment and we will share these in class.
